Authorship, truth and opinion are interrogated in Jay Jermyn’s work ‘The Developing Story’. A 2-minute 23-second video (the average time of a major broadcast news story), the work is a moving image montage made of a shifting convergence of talking heads, news tickers and headlines telling the broadcast stories of the world spanning 2019 and into early 2020. In its brief yet sustained presentation of information the feeling of the work is one of sensory assault. The messages and their meanings become secondary to the layered and abstracted audio and visuals repeating catch phrases and images from the year that was. Playing on the notion of political bias in the presentation of content, the work accentuates the mixed messages that perpetuate a lack of transparency in the commercial presentation of the stories of our times.
